Peter Hentz Obituary

Peter Hentz passed peacefully at his home with his family by his side on August 29, 2023 at the age of 91.  Husband of Tina DeCorte, Hentz (2018).  Loved father of Karen and Don Ford and family, Michael and Ingrid Hentz and family, Gerald and Nora Hentz and family, Susan Laing and Jeff Jackson and family and Patricia and Jim Corneil and family.   Peter was extremely proud of his 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; often remarking on how “great” they made him feel.  He and Tina were familiar faces at many local arenas for hockey and figure skating and at school events, birthdays and other milestones, always making time to celebrate the achievements of their family.

Peter was born in Windsor, Ontario and was the youngest child of Stefan (1968) and Elizabeth (1989) (Becker) Hentz.  Predeceased by his brother John and sister-in law June Hentz and sister Mary and brother-in-law Don Lumley.  Peter has many nieces and nephews in both the Hentz and DeCorte families who remember him with great affection as “Uncle Pete”.

Peter and Tina began their married life in 1955 on the farm near Wallacetown where they remained until the end.  Farming was their life and livelihood and they advocated for agriculture wherever they could.

Peter was proud to represent his Dutton-Dunwich community as a councillor, Reeve and member of Elgin County Council, where he is still remembered fondly.  He had the ability to listen to everyone and to try to understand their point of view.

Peter was an avid hunter and fisherman and instilled this passion in his sons, grandsons and some granddaughters!  He was very particular about taking care of his equipment and everyone knew they should do the same.

In his retirement, Peter became an enthusiastic and darn good golfer.  He particularly enjoyed out-driving people much younger than him.   He made many friends on the golf course and loved to tell people that he was the oldest golfer on the course.

A private family internment will be held.     A celebration of Peter’s life will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 at the home farm, 8544 Currie Road, Wallacetown from 3 to 7 PM.  Please come and share a happy memory with his family.

Anyone wanting to make a charitable donation in Peter’s memory are encouraged to consider The Hospice of Elgin County.
