Norma Marion McPhail (née Cross, formerly Johnston)
April 21, 1952 – June 26, 2025
With her family by her side, Norma’s generous heart came to rest on June 26, 2025, at University Hospital - London Health Sciences Centre. She was 73.
Born on April 21, 1952, Norma was the eldest daughter of the late Leo and Madeleine Cross, and grew up in Clachan. She began her life of service early and carried it through her 36-year career as a dedicated nurse, caring for countless patients with kindness and compassion.
Norma married and built a family with John Richard “Dick” Johnston, who passed away in 2002. In the years that followed, Norma was blessed to find deep love and companionship with her husband of 17 years, Duncan McPhail. Their years together were filled with love, laughter, travel, and a deep commitment to family and community. Duncan passed away on March 11, 2023—a loss Norma felt profoundly.
Norma was a loving and devoted mother and stepmother to Jennica (Kyle) Drake, Erin Johnston (Zach Thoraval), Scott Johnston, Brent McPhail, Shawn McPhail (Kendra Boyd), Heather (Nick) Chuter, and Nicole McPhail (Vince Stendardo). She was the very proud Grandma of Avery, Bryson, Abigail, Alex, Leo, Merritt, Jack, and Fiona and excited for the arrival of one more.
She will be deeply missed by her siblings Ronald (Cathy) Cross, Audrey (Gary) Jamieson, and Catherine (Randy) Smith; by her sisters-in-law Renée Kleinjan (Calvin, 1995) and Jeannette (Herb) Kebbel; and by her extended Johnston and McPhail families, including many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
In retirement, Norma remained active and community-minded, serving on various committees including The Old Town Hall, the Economic Development, Heritage Homes, and Rodney Park Revitalization committees, as well as the Harvest Bowl Project. She loved spending time at the family cottage, traveling the world with Duncan—often to visit their children living abroad—and cherishing every moment of holidays and milestones with her family. Above all, she lived to care for others and gave her whole heart to those around her. Norma leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and deep family bonds. She will be missed beyond measure.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the healthcare professionals at Four Counties and University Hospitals for their compassionate care, as well as the many friends, neighbours, and extended family who supported Norma, especially following Duncan’s passing.
Visitation will take place at the Arn Funeral Home in Rodney on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A gathering to honour and remember Norma’s life will follow on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. with interment at McLean Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Norma’s memory can be made to the Rodney Park Revitalization fund.
