Jonathan “Jon” Fleming
June 1, 1985 – September 7, 2025
It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jonathan “Jon” Fleming, who left us far too soon on September 7, 2025, at the age of 40. Jon passed away at St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital due to complications from ulcerative colitis, surrounded by the love of his family.
Jon was born in Chatham, Ontario, and grew up on his family’s farm in Rodney, Ontario. After moving away for school, he ended up in Meaford, Ontario working at The Golf Club at Lora Bay. It was at this time that he and his wife Carla would reconnect and start dreaming of a future together. Jon and Carla built their life together in Dutton, Ontario, where they got married, built their forever home and started raising their two children, Rosie (6) and Francis (4).
Jon will be forever loved and deeply missed by his devoted wife and high school sweetheart, Carla Fleming (Oliveira), and their two young children, Rose & Francis, who were the light of his life. He will be cherished always by his parents, Frank and Shelley (Tilden) Fleming, his sisters Jennifer (Brad) Urquhart and Jackie (Gary Nelles) Fleming. Jon was also a beloved son-in-law to Carlos and Ilda (Meneses) Oliveira, and a brother-in-law to Marisa (Russ) Brokenshire, Elsa (Ryan) Peacock, Claudia (Brad) McCready, Ana (Jeff Ripley) Oliveira, and the late Carlos Oliveira Jr. He will also be remembered fondly as an amazing Uncle to Owen & Nathan; Claire & Taylor; Addison & Blake; Michael, Meghan & Ethan; and Tristan & Aiden.
Jon attended Aldborough Public School, West Elgin Secondary School, and later pursued his passion for golf at the University of Guelph, studying Turfgrass Management. His love for golf was more than a pastime—it was a calling. He began his career in golf course maintenance, later moving into golf course construction where he led crews with Titan Construction and Vergeer Golf. Colleagues admired Jon’s steady leadership, reliability, down-to-earth nature and commitment to excellence, qualities that reflected the thoughtful and deliberate way he approached life.
Outside of work, Jon was known for his easygoing spirit and love of life’s simple pleasures. Whether playing volleyball in high school, curling in local leagues, or enjoying a friendly game of cornhole or bocce ball in the backyard, Jon’s competitive but fun-loving nature shone through. He had a knack for making people feel at ease, and those who knew him best say he had “one speed”—steady and deliberate—unless Carla was in labour, in which case you’ve never seen anyone sprint across a field faster.
Jon and Carla married in the fall of 2017, beginning a new chapter that was filled with adventure, travel, and family. Their honeymoon in Italy remains a treasured memory, while summers at the McKellar family cottage and yearly trips to Florida became cherished traditions. Jon especially loved introducing Rosie and Francis to the quiet beauty of cottage life, as well as the warmth and fun of Florida family gatherings.
Jon’s greatest joy in life was his family. He lived with gratitude, love, and humility, teaching by example that happiness is found not in material wealth, but in connection, laughter, and shared memories.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Elgin International Club, 11558 Kerr Road, West Lorne, Ontario, with Words of Remembrance at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the GoFundMe fundraiser in support of Carla, Rosie, and Francis, ensuring Jon’s legacy of love and devotion continues through his children.
Jon will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will live on in the laughter of his children, the love of his family, and the countless lives he touched along the way.
