It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Helen Van Brenk (Akhurst) on October 9, 2024. Born in Australia on January 21, 1945, she was the oldest of three children. In 1969, she immigrated to Canada, where she established a loving home and built a meaningful life alongside her husband, Rien Van Brenk, to whom she was married for 53 years. Together, they raised three children: Mark, Brian, and Katrina, though tragically, they lost their beloved Mark at the age of 27.
A registered nurse by profession, Helen devoted much of her life to caring for others, both in her career and in the community she loved. She was an active volunteer and dedicated countless hours to organizations such as the Elgin County Museum Advisory Board, the Women’s Institute (Tweedsmuir), the Agricultural Society, and the Wallacetown Optimist Club, among many others. Her commitment to these causes touched countless lives and left a lasting impact.
Helen was also a proud grandmother, and she showed her love in the sweetest of ways: by giving her grandchildren candy and granting them free entry to the kitchen pantry, where a stash of treats was always waiting.
She loved watching sports, especially hockey and soccer, even if she didn’t always know the rules. Her enthusiasm at the rink and soccer field was infectious, whether she was doing jumping jacks to keep warm or cheering “Ice it!” and “boot the ball!” at the top of her lungs. She also had a passion for watching tennis, spending many hours following her favorite matches with deep interest. Known for her sense of humor and her colorful sayings like “bloody hell” and calling everyone “kiddo,” she brought a spirited joy to all who knew her.
Stubborn and determined in the best ways, she lived life on her own terms, showing strength and resilience in everything she did. Her legacy of love, laughter, and service will be remembered by her family, friends, and the entire community.
A celebration of her life will take place at the Dutton Community Centre on October 18, 2024, from 6-9pm, where all who knew her are invited to honor her memory and share stories of her incredible life. Eulogies will begin at 6:30 pm.
