Ernest Fredrick “Fred” Simpson died peacefully at home in Wallacetown Ontario on December 29, 2023. Fred was 94 years young and living independently.
Fred was born “at home” to Willard and Janet (nee McLarty) Simpson in August 1929. He moved from the home farm (south of Ridgetown) at age 21 to sharecrop the farm in north Dunwich Township which became home when he bought it a short time later. Fred started dating his future wife Berniece Shepley in high school and they were married in 1952.
Fred was a farmer - which meant he was a cattle feeder and grew the corn to feed them. He was a builder, welder, innovator, and risk taker. He added a herd of standardbred mares and won awards in racing their offspring. Meanwhile he took up the sport of curling and then golfing. Later in life he became skilled at wood turning and making “kiddie cars” for his expanding 2nd and 3rd generation family members. He was renowned for reciting poetry and discovered late in life that he loved to read.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife of six decades, Berniece (2012), grandsons Nicholas Hoefnagels (2013) and Christopher Hoefnagels (2022). He is survived by his six children, Kevin (Pauline) of Lacombe AB, Deniece Harrott (Ken) of Charlottetown PE, Wes (Michele) of London, Suzanne (Andrew) of Sarnia, Howard of Glencoe, and Erica (Jim) of Cochrane AB, his sister Ruth Campbell and by his sisters-in-law Donna Simpson and Helen (Simpson) Field. Predeceased by his brothers Kelso, Max, Ray, Don, Russel, Doug, Ivan and Edward Simpson and sisters Eileen Hayes, Fern Simpson, Adelaide Simpson and Beth Eskritt.
He was cherished grandfather of Hilary (Richard), Neil (Marta), Kristen, Colin (Kayla), Bryce (Kaitlyn), Colleen (Clarence), Emily (Brad), Heather (Mohamed), Ryan (Breanne), Megan (Jon), Gary (Krista), Jonathan (Megan) and Kaitlin (Denver). He was cherished great-grandfather of Lawson, Hayden, Jack, Camden, Sophia, Antonia, Blake, Travis, Parker, Alex, Taliyah, Gunner, Dominick, Autumn, Wesley, Dallas, Liam, Bane, Bo, Colton, Sophia, Eila, Madilyn, Eva, and Liz. Fred had many cousins, nieces and nephews who will also miss him.
Cremation has taken place and a private interment service will be held in Tyrconnell Cemetery.
A public Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
