1932 - 2025
" I had the last waltz with you
Two lonely people together
I fell in love with you
The last waltz should last forever." E.Humperdick
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ernest "Ernie" Vallin Gomes who peacefully departed this life on May 26, 2025 at the age of 92 at his home in Rodney, Ontario. Born in 1932 in Port of Spain, Trinidad &Tobago. He was a loving spouse, father, grandfather of eight children and great-grandfather of elven children. He is survived by his spouse Juliet "Jules" Gomes: sister Monica Gomez and children Sheraine, Caryl, Stuart and Ryan.
Ernie was an avid Cricketer in his younger years. A brave decision was made to immigrate to Canada in the 1960's to provide a better life for the family. The children are forever grateful for that bravery. That cultural adjustment changed the passion from Cricket for the joy of recreational fishing. He loved his time on the lake in the Kawartha region of Ontario which was his happy place at the cottage with Jules and family every summer. Bobcaygeon was his paradise as introduced by the Fernandes family. Ernie spent many years in front of the stove and trust that whatever he made was (in his Trinidadian accent) "Da bes you eva had in your life." He was sharp, witty, and smooth with his feet on the dance floor. Family weddings were his way to showcase his moves while gliding Juliet to their usual favorites.
Later in life there was a temporary relocation to Nova Scotia. Ernie loved his years there and never missed a good Sobeys sale. His daily visits there cause much excitement as he could be seen shaking his arms up and down the aisles. He was a late night security guard as well, patrolling the shoreline of the family home adjacent to municipal property for trees that "blocked his view" of the ocean that needed a late night "secret" trimming.
He loved his time visiting the grandkids and playing with his great-grandchildren. His joy.
He was simply "Ernest", "Ernie", "Dad", "Grandad", "Dada", or "Skinny".
As per Ernie's request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. The family would like to send heartfelt thanks for the care, love and compassion provided by the healthcare teams at Ontario Health at Home, Closing the Gap, Care Partners, Arn Funeral Home, and certainly his daughter Caryl for her selfless care in the last years of his life.
Rest assured, Jules was there...every time you asked.
